UPDATE 2/15/17:It’s been about a year and a half of HEAVY use of this, for business purposes. No problems. It runs an average of 6-7 days/week about 8-12hrs a day.And knock on wood zero trouble with anything yet. That should speak volumes. There are lemons in a any product line, expensive or not, but this one’s been a gem.
4.5 stars out of 5.This computer packs a lot of guts for the price.Looks very nice, has an aluminum (looking) shell, black keys on silver face.It does what I need it to do and nothing else has the 5th generation i7 processor at this pricepoint PLUS HD screen PLUS backlit keypad. This is my 3rd Acer in 10 years. My first Acer laptop is still running, somewhere around 9 or 10 years old.Say what you want, but I think they are solid machines for their price.
This model comes with: -matte screen -HD 1080p resolution -backlit keypad (which toggles on or off) -5th generation Intel i7 5500U processor -8 GB RAM(capacity of 16 GB) -1 TB 5400rpm HDD -Dedicated graphics via NVIDIA GeForce 840M 2GB, PLUS Intel HD (each has its own settings) -6 cell, 7hr Li-ion battery -Removable, replaceable battery -Windows 8.1 (free upgrade to Windows 10 if you choose) -Dolby Home Theater sound -Two down-firing speakers located on the front-bottom, sound is less than ideal because of this orientation, but plenty loud -One 3.0 USB port and two 2.0 USB ports -Charger adapter cord -Charger jack on right side near hinge (aren’t they normally on the left?) -Multi-gesture mouse/trackpad, with pinch ‘n zoom and built in no-line R and L click buttons -Built-in 720p webcam -Some bloatware programs, mostly Acer branded stuff -Up/down left/right arrows on keypad also adjust your volume and screen brightness, respectively, with use of the Function ("Fn") key. This location is unique to Acer’s keyboard design and I love having those controls right where I know they are instead of having to scan up at the many F keys. -MIMO wireless antenna(s), whatever that is.Supposed to increase signal and speed. In my upstairs where I used to get 2-3 bars of wireless signal on my old laptop, I now get a full 4 bars on this one.
This computer does NOT come with: -DVD/CD optical drive -Any backup or install discs -No scrolling via mouse trackpad like some models had/have -No easy access panel to HDD and RAM on the bottom panel -Obviously no current updates, Windows Update has millions (it seems) of updates to download and hours and hours of installing and restarting. This is true of any new computer though.
I am happy with this purchase, I am not at all inclined to return the computer. The matte screen took a little getting used to, it puts a slightly softer hue on the colors, but they are still rich and it gets plenty bright, and it does limit much of the glare that glossy screens reflect. The sound isn’t as crisp as it could be due to the down-firing speakers located on the bottom of the computer.I find this very odd, since in my experience they’ve always been on top, up-firing.When I tip the computer back, the speakers sound much better when they fire straight at you.Oh well, you can’t have everything perfect or you’d pay nearly double.I read other users saying the keyboard has a hump in it, I do not notice this at all.If it actually does, it’s so minor I can’t see it.Perhaps certain ones had this and not others?I also read another reviewer saying the keys were weak, and that if you press one key down a couple other keys beside it would depress a little- again, this is not my experience. The keys are responsive, crisp and quiet. You could type in a library without bothering people. One thing I do notice is that the number lock seems to default to "off" every time I restart the computer, which is annoying.IMO number lock should always default to "on".The trackpad doesn’t have the ‘scroll’ feature on the R-side.On my previous Acer the tight R side had a swiper built in that allowed you to scroll up & down on pages like the wheel of a mouse, except with your finger obviously. This was addicting for many years and I really miss it.
I hope to have this computer a good 8-10 years as I’ve come to expect from Acer.

I intend to update this review when I’ve had some more time using the product, to see how it holds up.I bought a used version of this laptop from the Amazon Warehouse, because at <$400 for an i7 processor, dedicated graphics card, and getting to stick with Windows 8.1 over 10, I felt like I was getting a pretty sweet deal.Moving up from my most recent Samsung ATIV Book 2, this computer has noticeably better sound quality and volume, if it seems a little tinny at times (I’m not much of an audiophile so it’s not a huge sticking point for me).The build is pretty solid, though the screen is thin and easy to bend with the hand; I would never set anything much heavier than a hardback novel on top of it. Some other reviews have complained about the quality of the screen, but it appears to be a perfectly normal matte. No issues there.
The big problem with this machine is actually the trackpad software. From the moment I first turned it on, I was pretty shocked at how bad it felt.It is massively oversensitive, to the point that lifting your finger to click jerks the cursor several millimeters away from the thing you are trying to select.Something as simple as grabbing the hitbox for expanding or shaping a window is an exercise in patience, and the two-finger scroll only engages about 65% of the time you try to use it.There are also no Synaptics or Elantech settings available in the Control Panel so that you can attempt to fix any of these problems.Acer has instead decided that the the mouse and touchpad settings should be integrated into the Windows 8.1 Metro interface, where the customization options are extremely limited and none of them fix the problem. It is awful to use.
The good (?) news is that I found a workaround: Don’t use Windows.I was already planning on dual-booting this computer with Linux Mint and using Windows exclusively for moderate gaming and digital art, neither of which are trackpad-appropriate.When running Mint, the trackpad works fine and is comfortably responsive without being oversensitive.Two-finger scroll works exactly when you need it to and a terminal command even gets the drag lock working.I take my computer away from its desk frequently and use it for word processing without bringing the mouse, so having a good trackpad is a necessity for me.If it is for you too, avoid this model (possibly all Acer V-series computers running 8.1?) or get yourself a different OS.
I have a couple more weeks to decide if I want to keep the laptop or return it.I don’t know where else I’m going to be able to get these specs for the price, but the keyboard also seems to have a delay associated with the letter "i’, which I see most often in the word "point." Point point ponit point ponit ponit ponit.See?I swear it’s not me.
EDIT MARCH 2018: Have been using this machine for about five months now and felt I should make note here the position of the speakers, which point out the bottom. On a desk the computer gets good volume, but when placed on a soft surface (like your lap) sound is extremely muted.Worth considering.
I got this for around $650 4 months ago so i have had time to get use to it. If you are well versed is computers then you should know a i7 with a dedicated graphics chip is a steal at this price. The computer is completely made out of plastic, but it is a solid computer. The back lit keyboard is awesomely unexpected at this price, but its nice to have that option. The screen is just ok, it is full 1080p but the antiglare really diminishes the look. I did some gaming and it can handle midrange games no problem. If you are looking to play the latest games like BF4 then you could play it with all the settings on low. It doesn’t have a optical drive, but it does have a slot for one. If anyone knows the parts I need to put an ssd in that slot please reply. My one complaint is about the computers trackpad. There are no physical right or left click buttons The trackpad is one big button and you have to click on the left or right side to click or right click respectively. This makes it hard to browse because you can forget which side of the trackpad you are on if you are not always looking down at it. You should get a external mouse if you don’t want to be constantly annoyed with this trackpad. The pc is a little slow on boot up but all in all the computer is a steal at this price, very happy with it so far.

I have been working on computers since the 80's, so I have a good background in computers. So my wife wanted a new computer so she can go back and get her masters.I researched them, and for the price this worked well. It's fast, however, loaded with tons of junk software I had to remove. Moreover, I use Webroot Secure anywhere Anti virus (which I highly recommend) and it even pulled up two pre-installed virus purchase trackers.I wasn't happy with that. However, as I said, the computer is a good one if you know how to remove all the pre-installed junk.
BTW, I quickly removed the virus software installed, it's junk and tries to get you to buy a bunch of crappy add ons.
I bought the Acer Aspire E to replace my Gateway laptop. (It still works, albeit a bit slower than when I first bought it. However, the screen has come off one of the hinges).
I really like this computer. My husband recently used it to record audio for a play at the high school. Just today, he used it to record the sermon at church. (Please note that the ability to record requires other components besides the Acer laptop. I use this simply to illustrate it's versatility).
During the school year, I use the laptop to write lesson plans and other work-based applications.
The only reason why I did not give the computer five stars is because it lacks a disc drive. Please note that I didn't realize this at the time of purchase (which was my oversight - not Amazon's). Other than this, the laptop performs as expected. (The new Windows does take awhile to get used to. It was optimized for a touch screen tablet which this computer IS NOT. But after some time and practice, I've concluded that it is more streamlined than Windows 7 or XP)
I must return this laptop due to manufacturing defects. It it cheaply assembled, powercord plug in port on the laptop is slightly misaligned making it difficult to plug in. Powercord itself disconnects itself at the inverter box built into the cord. Taskbar clock keeps changing erratically (it was 11:10am all day yesterday and correct today), suggesting CMOS battery may be weak (according to google).
I bought the Acer Aspire E5-71-7776 laptop in 2016. When I received the laptop two of its USB ports didn't work! I contacted Acer support(still under warranty) and I mailed my laptop and received it in about 2.5 weeks later and the usb ports were fixed.
Since then, about 2-3 weeks after it was out of warranty, the power cable that connects to the laptop for charging broke leaving a metal part in the laptop and thereby I couldn't charge the laptop. It was out of warranty, so I had to pay $120 to a computer repair shop to fix it.
About 2 months later, the left hinge of my Acer laptop cracked(laptop wasn't dropped), it simple cracked when opening it.. This means that I know I can't close my laptop, and I have a metal piece sticking out of the left hinge. I googled this left hinge on Acer laptops and I got alot of hits. I contacted Acer to to see if they would fix it, but the answer is sorry its out of warranty.
I learned the hard way. I'd recommend anyone considering an Acer laptop to spend a little more and buy a quality PC made of metal instead of the plastic that Acer uses. I'll never buy another Acer product!
Apparently this is a somewhat common issue with acer aspire laptops, but after having this laptop for 2 months, the LED screen began flashing white, and shortly after remained completely white, obviously rendering it useless. Since it was clearly still under warranty Acer fixed it for me no hassle, no questions asked, but I was a little surprised to see it having problems so early on.
Other than that, this laptop has a great battery life, runs great, all that good stuff. Im not a huge fan of the speakers being on the bottom, but nothing is perfect.
The hotkeys require pressing down the function key for the more common button presses (this is irreversible, unlike other computers), neither number lock nor Caps lock stay in effect after putting the computer to sleep, the trackpad not only has terrible sensitivity but the left mouse click is getting stuck after only 2 months of using the computer, the internet connection is spotty, and Chrome constantly freezes and restarts where it did not on my other 4-year-old computer.
On the other hand, the battery life is still good, but I have only been using the computer for two months.
I ordered this laptop a few weeks ago, and am very ambivalent about it.
Pros The keyboard and touchpad are pretty solid. -The long battery life (around 6-7 hours as promised, also detachable). -Solidly built and relatively lightweight -Fast boot up and processing
Cons -The sound is absolutely ABYSMAL. The speakers are located at the bottom of the laptop, which horribly compromises the overall sound quality. I listen to music and YouTube a lot, and often find myself having to adjust the volume according to each video. I wish I had known this before purchasing. -The faulty number lock. You have to toggle it on/off on startup and wakeup EVERY TIME, which is a hassle. Other users have trouble with this as well. -No optical drive. Thought I wouldn't miss it, but I definitely do. -Poor customer service. As far as I know, there is only one person who manages the Live Chat feature. Overall, customer service isn't responsive nor helpful. -Recently, the low battery notifications have stopped popping up (settings unchanged), so it will sleep or hibernate abruptly.
I'm considering returning it, but haven't had any luck finding a better laptop within this price range. I might just keep it. Haven't decided yet.
